Meet Rick Sulik, author of Death Umasked

This week, I’d like to introduce you to Rick Sulik, author of Death Unmasked.

What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

My mom and dad were spiritual romantics, and I too, am a spiritual romantic.

Are the names of your characters important to you?

Yes. The protagonists, Houston homicide detectives – Sean Jamison, Roman Addison, and Captain Virginia Schaeffer, are a combination of police personalities (veterans) of all my Houston Police Department, Field Training Officers (FTO’s), during my training / probationary period in the late 70’s.

How did you choose a title for your book?

The title, Death Unmasked, came to mind in a ‘blink-of-an-eye,’ due to my belief in reincarnation.

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

Learning to switch from ‘descriptive’ police report ‘fact’ writing, to, ‘creative’ and colorful storytelling ‘novel’ writing.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.”  Richard Bach / Author, Jonathan Livingston Seagull

What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?

Marrying my soulmate.

Where did you find your inspiration to write your novel?

  • Music – These three entrancing tunes dramatize the storyline in, Death Unmasked: ‘Greensleeves,’ by Mantovani, ‘Think of Laura,’ sung by, Christopher Cross: and ‘Mary in the Morning,’ sung by, Al Martino.
  • Oscar Wilde’s Disquieting Poem – ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol (Jail).’
  • My belief in Reincarnation.

What is your favourite TV moment of all time?

*The windowed gazebo scene in, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s, ‘The Sound of Music,’ starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer singing, ‘Something Good…,’ “Nothing comes from nothing, nothing ever could…”
