Meeting Nicola Warwick, author of Groundings

This week I’d like you all to meet Nicola Warwick. After attempts to write plays and novels, she rediscovered poetry while taking a Diploma in Creative Writing in 1999, and has been writing more seriously since then. She has been published in several poetry magazines, including the Rialto, Acumen, the South and Poetry Review and has been shortlisted in many competitions including Hysteria 2015. She is a regular attendee at the Poetry Café in Arlingtons in Ipswich and a member of Second Light. Groundings is her first anthology

The Nicola Warwick Interview

nicola warwickWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

When I was growing up, because I had two sisters, I granted the pet dog the honour of being my honorary brother.

What did the worst review you ever had say about you and your work?

I was once involved in my local theatre’s writing workshops and had a play produced as a rehearsed reading. The subject of the play was a family wedding and the theatre critic of the local paper clearly thought it was too long because she said that she wished the knife to cut the wedding cake had been used on the script.

Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?

When I was young I wanted to be an actress but was too shy to audition for any parts in the school play. Then I wanted to be a vet but I was rubbish at all science subjects. As I got older, I really wished I could be an archaeologist because I get excited over the prospect of finding buried treasure.

How do you remain sane while working?

I don’t – because I think it better not to be. Aren’t all the best writers a little unhinged?

Are you jealous of other writers?

Absolutely – but in a good way that motivates me to get better in my own work.

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

That it’s very important to write with a fountain pen.
